Study Finds Gentle Touch Doubles Dating Success Rates

French researcher Nicolas Gueguen discovered that simple touch increases romantic success rates. His 21-year-old assistant approached 120 women at nightclubs and asked them to dance. Half the women received gentle arm touches during the interaction.

The assistant also tested another approach with 240 women on the street. He complimented their appearance and requested their phone numbers for dinner dates. Again, he touched half the women lightly on their arms.

Touch proved powerful in both experiments. At clubs, 43 percent of women agreed to dance without touch compared to 65 percent with touch. On the street, 10 percent shared phone numbers without touch but 20 percent responded positively when touched.

Professor R. Wiseman explains in his book that gentle touching signals high social status. Men who touch women's arms appear more confident and attractive. Skin contact also suggests deeper intimacy and shows openness between people.

Psychotherapist Virginia Satir believes touch helps humans survive and stay healthy. The research shows touch also works on subconscious levels to attract romantic partners. People should incorporate more physical contact into their social interactions.
