Study Finds Prothom Alo Tops News Retractions as Media Misinformation Surges

A new study found that Prothom Alo retracts more fake news stories than any other media outlet in Bangladesh. Kalbela came second and Ittefaq ranked third in the research. The Press Institute Bangladesh hosted a seminar Saturday where researcher Mamun-or-Rashid shared his findings. His study looked at how false information spreads through Bangladesh media. The research covered six months from January through June this year.

Fake news publishing increased after the August 5 student protests last year. Media companies chase viral stories instead of factual reporting. The researcher analyzed 694 broken links from major news websites using five different methods. Several other outlets like Jugantor and The Daily Star also appeared on the retraction list. Commercial profits drive many outlets to publish misleading content.

Prime Minister assistant Faez Ahmed Tayyeb spoke at the event as chief guest. He warned that false information could reach record levels before upcoming national elections. Political parties and candidates might spread lies to gain advantages. Social media activity changed dramatically since August with Awami League presence growing. Opposition party BNP lost half of its online following during the same period.

Media outlets focus more on going viral than telling the truth. This trend threatens public trust and could harm the country. Content creators and bloggers might replace traditional news sources if mainstream media loses credibility. Tayyeb urged media owners to invest in fact-checking technology. Better training and digital tools can help journalists fight misinformation problems.
