Sunrise Airways halts flights after gunfire hits plane

Sunrise Airways has grounded its entire Port-au-Prince operation after gunmen opened fire on one of its planes during landing, striking the aircraft as it descended toward Toussaint Louverture International Airport from Les Cayes. The carrier announced the indefinite shutdown while promising affected travelers full refunds or rebooking options, emphasizing that passenger protection remains paramount as gang violence chokes the Haitian capital.

Armed groups have commandeered vast swaths of Port-au-Prince following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, with United Nations officials warning that criminal factions exercise nearly absolute authority over the city. American aviation regulators previously banned low-altitude commercial operations across Haiti through next year after a Spirit Airlines jet took gunfire that wounded a crew member, forcing an emergency diversion to Dominican territory.
