Supreme Court Nominee Backs Cap After Court Reform Plan

A judge picked for Ghana's top court wants limits on how many justices can serve. Hafisata Amaleboba told lawmakers the court needs major changes first. She said officials should fix case delays and overlapping duties before setting caps. The court handles too many different types of cases right now. Rushing to limit justices could create bigger problems later.

Ghana's Supreme Court currently has 13 members serving. Seven new judges await approval from Parliament for appointments. The total would reach 20 justices if lawmakers approve all nominees. Many people question whether having more judges helps or hurts the court system. Amaleboba thinks the country should study how many cases judges handle each year.

The nominee also talked about judges who serve as traditional chiefs. She warned these dual-role officials must watch their public comments carefully. Judges cannot appear to favor political groups over others. Maintaining neutrality helps protect the court's reputation among citizens.

Amaleboba explained that Ghana already has laws covering child support payments. Parents can request maintenance money without filing for divorce. The Department of Social Welfare reviews adoption requests from families. A new Central Adoption Authority makes the process work better for everyone involved.
