Switch 2 holiday sales dip despite strong launch

Nintendo just fumbled the bag hard during the most important shopping season of the year. Reports indicate the Switch 2 sold thirty-five percent fewer units inside the United States compared to the original console during the 2017 holidays. British numbers also dropped sixteen percent for that exact same window.

This slump happened despite a massive launch where the company moved three million consoles within four days. The system managed to shift ten million total boxes before November arrived. Things looked promising until momentum completely stalled out when it mattered most across major territories like France, where sales dipped thirty percent.

Europe collectively outpaced the original holiday figures by seven percent because of strong regional performance. The United Kingdom also finished the full year six percent ahead of the previous generation. Japan saw similar yearly gains of eleven percent despite a slight holiday decrease.

Insiders blame the lack of a proper 3D Mario platformer for killing the hype train. Big releases like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and Mario Kart World failed to carry the load. Even Donkey Kong Bananza and Kirby Air Riders could not replicate the impact Odyssey had back in 2017.

Economics played a massive role since new tariffs made essentials more expensive for American buyers. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella noted families prioritized food over gaming hardware because inflation wrecked disposable income. The industry just suffered the worst November for hardware movement since 1995 due to these rising costs.

Future success depends heavily on software announcements since the current lineup clearly missed the mark.
