Switch 2 leaks spill tea on 120Hz VRR screen

Nintendo has been silent about what's inside its upcoming Switch 2 gaming device. When it first teased this new machine, it barely showed any details. Media outlets have been hunting for leaks since early 2020, starting when kopite7kimi found something called an NVIDIA "T239" chip. Last week, reports mentioned Famiboards as a pretty good source for secret Nintendo information.

A Famiboards member broke their secrecy agreement earlier this year, revealing Switch 2 screen details. They wrote: "I've heard that the screen supports 120 Hz and VRR, which should help a lot in handheld." Later, SecretBoy added more info: "Developers can optimize the handheld profiles of their games with VRR and 40 FPS in mind." The GamingLeaksAndRumours Reddit group trusts SecretBoy because he correctly predicted GPU performance before anyone else knew about it.

Today, Reddit collected SecretBoy's latest comments about the Switch 2. He repeated, " The screen is 120 Hz with HDR and VRR support. That's what I'm personally most excited for." He added, " I have no idea about the actual quality of the screen, but I think OLED was always going to be expensive for this feature set." He believes Nintendo needed these features from the start for game developers to work with them.

Screen experts feel let down by Nintendo's choice of a basic LCD panel instead of OLED. Many point out that Valve looked at Nintendo's OLED Switch (from 2021) when upgrading their Steam Deck handheld with better screens in 2023. People invited to Nintendo's special preview events across the world next month will experience this new LCD screen technology firsthand.
