Dr Sidi Ould Tah from Mauritania won the election for African Development Bank president yesterday. He becomes the ninth person to lead the bank group. The voting happened at the 2025 AfDB annual meetings that finish today. Niale Kaba announced the results as chairperson of the board of governors. She serves as planning minister for Cote d'Ivoire.
The new president received over 76 percent of votes from member countries. Samuel Munzele Maimbo from Zambia came second with about 20 percent support. Amadou Hott from Senegal finished third with less than 4 percent. Two other people ran for the job from South Africa and Chad. Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala and Tolli Abbas Mahamat lost the election.
Ould Tah thanked board members for choosing him during his victory speech. He promised to work hard for African development across the continent. Maimbo posted congratulations on social media after losing the race. The Zambian candidate said governors picked the right leader for Africa. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf from the African Union also congratulated the winner.
