Tanzania criticizes CNN report on election violence, calls for fairness

Tanzanian authorities continue examining allegations contained within an investigative piece that documented violence surrounding the late October election, with officials promising a complete response after verification concludes. Government spokesperson Gerson Msigwa criticized the network's approach, asserting the piece lacked balance and failed to adequately incorporate official perspectives despite contrary claims by the broadcaster. The official questioned why a prominent international outlet would publish material he characterized as one-sided and inflammatory during a period of national mourning and instability.

The investigation examined alleged security force shootings of peaceful demonstrators and reported claims of concealed burial sites used to hide casualty totals. The reporter stated he had sought entry credentials to cover the voting process but was denied access, forcing remote coverage. Authorities recently established an inquiry panel headed by former Chief Justice Mohamed Chande to examine the disturbances and related concerns raised domestically and internationally.
