Tanzania's Police Crack Down on Dangerous Drivers

Police in Tanzania want bad drivers off the roads. They plan to take away licenses from people who break traffic rules. Many crashes have hurt people and damaged roads this holiday season.

Traffic Police Commander William Mkonda shared news about their work on Friday. His team took 14 driver's licenses away this week. These drivers were speeding or drinking. They caught 16,324 other drivers breaking the rules and made them pay fines.

"We see many crashes because drivers don't follow the rules," Mkonda said. "They drive fast and pass other cars when they shouldn't."

The police mean business. They told officers across Tanzania to watch the roads day and night. Bad drivers will lose their jobs. Mkonda wants them to find new work if they can't drive safely.

Police want to teach people about road safety. They ask riders to speak up when they see bad driving. This helps make roads safer for everyone.

A sad event showed why these rules matter. Six people died yesterday in Mbinga, Ruvuma. Their car fell down a hill and caught fire. The victims were four teachers, a medicine worker, and their driver. They were going to Limbo School when the crash happened.

District leader Salumu Ismail said the crash killed everyone right away. It happened at 8 in the morning near Chunya. The group was traveling from Lumalu Village to do work at the school.

The police want drivers to choose between following the rules and finding new jobs. They hope strict rules will save lives on Tanzania's roads.
