Tatami Judo Rebel Takes On Regime

Two filmmakers from Israel and Iran created a sports drama together despite rising tensions between their countries. Guy Nattiv and Zar Amir Ebrahimi directed Tatami about a female judo athlete facing political pressure. The Iranian government forces her character to fake an injury rather than compete against an Israeli opponent. Real Iranian athletes inspired the story after they fled their homeland for similar reasons. The movie earned $16,200 during its first weekend at one New York theater.

Missiles continue flying between Israel and Iran as both nations escalate military attacks. Israel targeted Iranian nuclear facilities and infrastructure during recent air strikes. Iranian rockets killed at least 10 people during the ongoing conflict. The directors filmed their collaboration during 2022 when global politics seemed more stable. Critics gave Tatami positive reviews with a 90 percent rating on movie websites.
