The head of the taxi operators' group has shot down rumors about replacing all taxis with buses. Rashid Sekindi, who leads the Uganda Taxi Operators Federation, called the stories completely false and meant to scare people. He spoke at a press conference in Kampala.
Sekindi said the gossip is coming from drivers who cannot go on a planned trip to Dubai because they lack passports. The federation is organizing this visit with the company Spiro as a learning tour for drivers with valid travel documents. He stressed the journey is just for education and observation of foreign transport systems, not for buying buses or negotiating imports. He added that the federation did not bring in the buses already running in Uganda.
Another official, Faizo Lule Sebirumbi from Namayiba Taxi Park, warned drivers to be careful on the roads during the holiday period. He cited dangers from unlicensed operators and people driving under the influence. He told passengers that fares are not going up and advised them to leave early to beat traffic.
