Taxi swerves off road into swamp, four dead

Four people lost their lives when their shared taxi crashed into a swamp near Kagulu village. The Toyota Hiace vehicle carried passengers from Buyende town toward Kaliro district late at night. The driver could not keep control of the taxi on the wet road surface. The vehicle slid off the path and sank deep into Nalujjo swamp waters. All passengers drowned before anyone could save them.

Local people working security shifts saw the crash happen around midnight. They pulled three men and one woman from the damaged taxi after it went under water. Rescue workers brought the bodies to Mulali primary school grounds first. Medical staff later moved them to Kidera health center for examination. Police water rescue teams came to help but arrived after everyone had already died.

A motorcycle taxi driver who rode behind the crashed vehicle blamed the dangerous road conditions. Moses Loota said the narrow street becomes very slippery when rain falls. Water drainage systems do not work properly on this route. Road sections have holes where concrete pipes have fallen down over time. Many crashes happen here every year because the government has not fixed these problems.

Loota asked transport officials to build a proper bridge across the swamp area. He said this would stop future accidents from happening when flood waters rise. The current road design puts drivers and passengers at serious risk during wet weather. Local people have seen many similar crashes on motorcycles and cars. Better road construction could prevent more deaths from occurring on this dangerous stretch.
