Many people consider Tofara Chitsveto, who runs Rivendale School, a private college located in Domboshava, possibly the worst headmaster anywhere on earth. He made shocking statements at the Harare Civil Court when he freely admitted to asking several of his students to date him. He claimed that every student he approached turned him down. These admissions left Magistrate Meenal Naratom completely stunned, prompting her to ask if he had been drinking.
Chitsveto came to court seeking protection from Sibongile Mavingire, another teacher who helped start the school with him. He complained that she hit him where students could see. Magistrate Naratom decided to grant his request for protection. Their relationship began as former teachers who partnered to create this educational institution together.
During the hearing, Chitsveto explained, "My colleague attacked me because she heard rumors about me dating a student, but I merely proposed love without actually dating any students. Sibongile damages my reputation, which hurts me deeply. I no longer want her working at my school. I plan to pay back all the money she put into starting our school. Running things by myself seems better than dealing with teachers who disrespect me by attacking me in front of children. She calls me both a drunkard and useless."
Sibongile revealed much more serious allegations when she spoke. She stated that Chitsveto had made romantic advances toward half the student body. She explained her role at the school involved guidance and counseling, which led students to confide in her about sexual harassment from the headmaster. Her investigation uncovered that he previously dated one student. She described how he ruined another student's reputation after she rejected him.
According to Sibongile, one student experienced severe emotional distress because Chitsveto falsely accused her of having multiple abortions simply because she refused his romantic advances. Sibongile also stated that Chitsveto removed both her and another teacher from the school communication group. Then, he began messaging parents with humiliating statements about both teachers.
Sibongile argued strongly against granting him legal protection. "He wants to use it against us and cause problems. This man craves power and tries to stop us from protecting student rights despite his abuse of them. We built this school as partners from the beginning, and we should finish what we started together," she declared.
