Zimbabwe teachers plan to stop working on Tuesday over money problems and poor job conditions. The Federation of Zimbabwe Educators Union wants each teacher to receive a monthly pay of 1,250 US dollars. Four different teacher groups joined together under this umbrella organization to demand better treatment. Teachers currently earn around 250 US dollars each month, along with 3,000 ZiG currency. Union leaders say this amount cannot cover basic living costs for families.
Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro attacked the strike organizers as fake representatives. He called the union leaders a small group of troublemakers pretending to speak for all teachers. Government officials believe strikes belong to the past and teachers should focus on classroom work instead. Ndoro said real progress happens through practical solutions rather than protest actions. The ministry refuses to recognize the union federation as legitimate.
Other teacher unions want the government to restore salaries of 540 US dollars monthly from pre-2018. Recent negotiations between civil servants and government officials ended without agreement on pay increases. Health workers and university professors are also preparing to strike over similar wage complaints. Progressive Teachers Union asked President Emmerson Mnangagwa to force Treasury officials to raise teacher salaries immediately.
