Thakurgaon Santals failed by NGOs says Deepali Tigga

Bashundhara Shuvosangho's Thakurgaon branch convened indigenous women to address persistent poverty and educational barriers facing Santal families in the district. Approximately 25 participants gathered at a settlement in Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila to discuss stagnant living conditions despite broader national development. Speakers including Deepali Tigga, noted that minimal improvements have occurred over two decades, with nongovernmental organization assistance yielding limited impact.

Estela Toppo described how economic pressures compel children to abandon education after primary grades and enter labor markets, with few reaching higher levels despite academic potential. Former organizational leaders Tapas Deb Nath and Rashedul Alam Liton advocated for sustained governmental intervention across health, cultural preservation, economic opportunity and social protections to elevate indigenous populations.

National Indigenous Council member Jespina Khalko presided over proceedings that included testimony from community representatives Krishtina Lakra and other residents alongside journalist Partho Sarathi Das. Participants emphasized that targeted policy measures remain essential for breaking cycles of disadvantage affecting Santal and related ethnic groups.
