The 20-year slumber of Saudi Arabia's Sleeping Prince finally ends

The Saudi royal court confirmed Saturday that Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal passed away at age 36. The prince earned the nickname Sleeping Prince after a devastating traffic collision in London two decades earlier left him unconscious. He sustained severe brain damage and internal bleeding during the 2005 accident while pursuing military cadet studies in Britain. Medical specialists treated the 15-year-old prince but were unable to restore his full awareness.

Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud refused to remove life support systems and maintained care for his son throughout 20 years of medical treatment. Family members reported rare signs of responsiveness from the prince during his extended unconsciousness. A 2020 video captured him moving his fingers when relatives called his name. Funeral services will take place Sunday at Riyadh's Grand Mosque.

Social media recently spread false reports claiming the prince had awakened from his prolonged unconscious state. These inaccurate stories circulated widely before his actual death occurred.
