The clamp that buys your isolation costs you by hour six

Beyerdynamic lists the DT 275 PRO at 195 grams and its over-ear sibling, the DT 270 PRO, at 194 grams, a single gram between two very different fits.

Weight is not the comfort variable most people think it is. What decides a long day is where the pressure lands. Over-ear cups rest on the skull around your ear and spread the load across bone. On-ear cups press directly on the pinna, which is thin cartilage with almost no padding of its own.

That pressure is also the thing generating your isolation. A seal needs force behind it, and force on cartilage is felt. The trade is structural, not a design flaw someone forgot to fix.

One gram apart and built for different heads​

Line the two models up, and the shared parts get obvious. Both sit at 45 ohms nominal. Both weigh within a gram of each other. beyerdynamic describes the sound coupling of both as circumaural in compact form.

The differences are the ones that matter for a ten-hour call. The 270 wears over the ear with velour pads. The 275 wears on the ear with soft, sweat-resistant leatherette. Beyerdynamic states plainly that the 275 delivers the higher passive isolation of the two, and nothing about size or mass explains that gap.

The pad material does a lot of the work. Velour breathes, stays cool, and leaks, because fabric does not seal against skin. Leatherette seals well, holds low frequencies out, and traps heat and sweat against you. Calling the pads sweat-resistant is beyerdynamic telling you what it expects the wearer to be doing.

One detail is worth reading closely. The 275 is listed with an on-ear wearing style and a circumaural coupling in the same table, which means the pad lands on the outer ear rather than enclosing it. Fit will vary more between heads than a full over-ear cup does, and if you have larger ears, the pressure concentrates where the pad crosses them.

Contact pressure is the number nobody publishes​

Sennheiser publishes a contact pressure of roughly 2.5 newtons for the HD 25, a 140-gram on-ear headphone that has held broadcast and booth work for decades. Beyerdynamic publishes no contact pressure figure for the DT 275 PRO at all.

That absence matters, because how hard the cups press against your outer ear is the single spec that predicts whether hour six goes well. Grams tell you what your neck carries. Newtons tell you what your ears carry. Only one of those is where the ache starts.

Glasses make it worse in a specific way. A temple arm under a leatherette pad turns spread pressure into a narrow line of pressure along the side of your head, and it breaks the seal at the same time. You lose comfort and isolation together. That is the trade the on-ear model built for loud rooms hands you, and no pad design gets around it.

Pads also change under you without announcing it. Foam compresses over months of gigs, the pad gets thinner, and the cup sits closer to your ear. Clamping force stays roughly the same while the surface area carrying it shrinks. Meanwhile the headband slowly relaxes in the other direction. Some days you get more ache and less seal at once, which is a confusing combination if you do not know to look for it.

Swiveling cups are the cheapest relief available. Rotate one off the ear and monitor single-sided for stretches when you do not need both, exactly as booth engineers have done with the HD 25 for years. Lifting the cups clear of your head for a minute or two each hour resets the skin under the pad, and it costs nothing but the habit. When the pads finally go flat, replace them rather than living with it, because fresh foam restores the seal and the comfort in the same move.
