A surprise gift nearly turned Thomas Mukanya Mapfumo into a social media target, yet the Zimbabwean musician says his beliefs remain untouched. He responded after fans criticized his choice, arguing that accepting support from a fan does not erase his human rights activism.
Mapfumo said he never sought political office and sees himself as an advocate for justice, freedom, and equality rather than a party leader. He believes elected opposition figures carry the duty of pursuing government change.
He plans to give most of the gift proceeds to charity and said other musicians and religious figures have accepted similar support. Mapfumo insists his music remains a platform for challenging injustice and speaking for ordinary Zimbabweans.
