Tinubu blocks trillion-naira census plan Sani hails move

Shehu Sani blasted the National Population Commission for asking for nearly one trillion naira just to count people across Nigeria. The former federal lawmaker called their massive budget request complete craziness. President Bola Tinubu shot down their plan, which would have cost N942 billion to run the national housing and population census this year. Instead, Tinubu wants members of the National Youth Service Corps to handle the counting job.

Sani publicly backed Tinubu's decision Saturday through his verified X account. He wrote that asking for almost a trillion naira merely to count Nigerians represents total insanity. The former lawmaker specifically praised the President's firm stand against approving such an enormous amount of cash. His social media post spelled out clear support for blocking what he viewed as an outrageously expensive proposal.

The rejection marks a significant shift from traditional census approaches in Nigeria. Reports indicate Tinubu completely dismissed the commission's financial demands as excessive. The President believes young corps members can effectively gather population data at a much lower cost to taxpayers. This decision signals Tinubu's emphasis on finding affordable alternatives for government operations.

Sani's comments reflect growing concerns about wasteful spending during tough economic times. Many Nigerians struggle with rising costs yet government agencies continue requesting huge budgets. The Population Commission wanted an amount that many citizens consider ridiculous when basic services need funding. By rejecting the proposal, Tinubu addresses public frustration with expensive government projects that deliver questionable value.
