Todd Howard says Elder Scrolls VI is still years away

Bethesda Game Studios conducted a major internal playtest for The Elder Scrolls VI on Sunday, according to director Todd Howard in a GQ interview published on Monday. Howard acknowledged the prolonged gap since Skyrim's November 2011 release but explained his development team required a creative refresh through Starfield's production. The studio has shown early builds to select fans, including supporters from Make-A-Wish and contributors to the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages website.

Howard expressed interest in releasing the game with minimal advance notice, comparing the approach to October's surprise launch of Oblivion Remastered. Microsoft may require more traditional marketing given the project's significance since its formal 2018 E3 announcement alongside Starfield. A fall 2027 timeframe represents the earliest plausible launch window, though early 2028 appears more probable based on current development status and industry observers' assessments.
