A Harare man who battled drug addiction for 15 years has dedicated his life to helping others avoid substance abuse. Tonderai Maphosa began drinking at age 21 while attending Selous University, which led to marijuana use and eventually crystal meth addiction.
Maphosa broke into a university computer lab where his father worked to steal equipment for drug money, landing him in jail. His addiction prevented him from being a proper father to his children, with one child calling him merely a sperm donor.
He quit drugs in December 2021 and credits his faith-based upbringing in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church for guiding his recovery. Maphosa leads workshops and community meetings to warn people about the risks of addiction and the importance of support networks.
The recovered addict remarried and started a new family while taking his parental duties seriously. He encourages communities to unite against substance abuse by creating support systems for people fighting addiction.
