Trailblazing gay imam killed in Cape Town ambush

Someone killed Muhsin Hendricks, a special religious teacher from South Africa. He was 57 years old and ran a mosque where everyone felt welcome, no matter who they were. Bad people shot him on Saturday morning when he was riding in a car near a city called Gqeberha.

Many people around the world felt very sad when they heard about his death. Julia Ehrt, who helps people who feel different, asked the police to find out why someone wanted to hurt Muhsin. She said he helped lots of people feel good about themselves and their faith.

The police found out what happened by watching security videos. These videos showed another car stopping Muhsin's car on the road. Someone jumped out and shot through the window where Muhsin was sitting. His friends at the Al-Ghurbaah Foundation told everyone he died, and they asked people to think about his family.

Muhsin worked hard to make everyone feel welcome in his mosque. He lived in South Africa, where the rules say everyone should be treated the same. But some people still treat others badly because they are different. Muhsin told everyone he was gay in 1996, which surprised many people. He started a special group to help others like him feel happy about their faith.

Someone made a movie about Muhsin in 2022. In this movie, he said being true to himself meant more than being afraid of dying. He wanted everyone to be kind to each other and understand that religion should bring people together.

Many people remember him as brave and kind. Sadiq Lawal, who lives far away in Nigeria, said Muhsin showed that anything was possible. He made many people feel better about themselves, and they will miss him very much.
