Transport ministry traps Bulawayo traffic in Victoria Falls Road chaos

Transport officials kicked off massive road repairs Monday on the busy Bulawayo to Victoria Falls highway. Workers will tear up sections between the city center and the Livingstone Bridge for the next year. Ministry bosses warned drivers about major traffic headaches lasting until July 2026. Construction crews plan to tackle the 99.6-kilometer to 104.6-kilometer stretch near Hnsuza first. Motorists must follow detour signs and reduce speeds through work zones.

Government officials expect the project to generate more than 2,000 jobs for residents along the 435-kilometer route. Five big construction companies landed the lucrative contracts to rebuild the crumbling highway. Fossil Contracting leads the pack alongside Masimba Construction and three other firms. Local communities will benefit from the employment bonanza as crews tackle different road sections. The massive undertaking falls under the National Roads Rehabilitation Programme, designed to fix the country's transport network.

Officials reminded drivers that ignoring construction signs breaks the law and puts lives at risk. Speed limits drop significantly through active work sites where heavy machinery operates daily. Transport ministry representatives promised regular updates as repairs advance through different phases. Safety barriers will protect both construction workers and passing vehicles during the lengthy renovation period. The ambitious infrastructure project aims to modernize one of the nation's most important tourist and commercial routes.
