Treasury CS Mbadi Condemns Ethnic Hijacking of Youth Protests

Treasury Secretary John Mbadi criticized politicians for turning youth protests into tribal conflicts. He spoke at a church event in Homa Bay County about recent demonstrations. Mbadi said opposition leaders used young people for their personal political goals. He claimed the June 25 protests stopped being a true youth movement. The secretary accused unnamed politicians of creating ethnic divisions through the demonstrations.

The protests started over anger about the Finance Bill 2024. Young Kenyans organized demonstrations through social media platforms. Mbadi said political actors changed the original peaceful purpose of the protests. He warned that tribal politics could damage the country for many years. The treasury chief asked all politicians to focus on unity instead of division.

Violence broke out during the nationwide demonstrations on June 25. Police fought with protesters in several cities across Kenya. At least 19 people died and 531 others suffered injuries. Mbadi pointed to large crowds in certain areas as proof of ethnic organizing. He said the protests turned into chaos and property destruction.

National Assembly leader Kimani Ichung'wah agreed with Mbadi about the violence. He spoke at a fundraiser in Kisumu County on Sunday. Ichung'wah called the protesters anarchists who wanted to create more violence. He reminded people that all ethnic groups belong to one Kenya. Both leaders asked politicians to stop using young people for harmful political purposes.
