Tree-hugger scores MKU scholarship, goes legit

Mt Kenya University is giving a full ride to environmental activist Truphena Muthoni. The scholarship, presented by Professor Peter Wanderi, will let her start studying there next January. This supports her work in conservation and mental health advocacy.

The award recognizes her symbolic activism, specifically her Guinness World Record for the longest continuous tree hug, which lasted 72 hours. This beat her own previous record. Her efforts recently earned her a state commendation medal from President Ruto, who also named her an ambassador for the national tree planting campaign.

The university's foundation grants this scholarship to young people showing exceptional dedication. It aligns with a larger alumni grant program MKU is funding over ten years. The aim is to empower community leaders who promote environmental stewardship and sustainable development through education.
