Trump imposes 100% chip tariff, spares allies Apple and Nvidia

President Trump declared a complete doubling of costs for semiconductor imports during discussions with Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook. The administration imposes this 100 percent levy to force domestic manufacturing expansion. Financial markets anticipated charges between 25 and 50 percent rather than the full doubling announced.

The policy aims to relocate production facilities from Taiwan and other overseas locations to American soil. Companies that establish manufacturing operations within the United States face no additional fees. Apple and NVIDIA receive exemptions based on their substantial domestic investment commitments.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company responds by expanding its Arizona operations with 300 billion dollars in planned spending. The White House considers chip production a national security priority after years of offshore dependency. Trump previously accused Taiwan of appropriating American semiconductor technology, making aggressive tariff measures predictable for the current administration.
