Trump teases Gaza peace as Netanyahu stalls, IDF hits Lebanon

President Donald Trump signaled on Sunday that Middle East peace negotiations have reached a breakthrough point. The president posted on Truth Social about achieving regional greatness for the first time. His optimistic assessment preceded a scheduled White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. Trump previously told reporters on Friday that he believes negotiators have secured a comprehensive agreement.

The American leader presented a 21-point framework during United Nations General Assembly discussions with Arab leaders. Diplomatic sources describe the proposal as requiring permanent ceasefire terms, complete Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza, and Palestinian Authority administrative participation. Netanyahu expressed measured support for the initiative but questioned whether Palestinian officials could reform effectively. The Israeli leader emphasized priorities of hostage releases, Hamas disarmament, and regional security guarantees.

Military tensions persist despite diplomatic progress, as Israeli forces struck Hezbollah weapons facilities in southern Lebanon on Sunday. The attacks occurred near Kfar Rumman and Jarmak despite a November 2024 ceasefire agreement that ended over one year of fighting. Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem rejected disarmament demands on Saturday during anniversary commemorations. The group maintains its arsenal while Lebanon faces pressure to implement broader security reforms.
