Tumwebaze inaugurates NARO council, pushes tech in farming

Uganda's Minister of Agriculture Frank Tumwebaze has called on the newly inaugurated governing council of the National Agricultural Research Organisation to spearhead a technology-driven agricultural transformation. Speaking at Monday's ceremony, Tumwebaze emphasized that precision farming methods using drones, artificial intelligence, and blockchain technology should form the foundation of what he termed a New Agriculture revolution.

The minister instructed NARO to create a dedicated directorate for agricultural technology development, with a focus on digitizing farming operations from planting through harvest. This technological shift aims to enhance productivity exponentially while making farming more commercially viable for Ugandan farmers.

According to Tumwebaze, mechanization and advanced digital tools will improve farming efficiency, reduce labor intensity, and increase crop yields. The initiative supports Uganda's economic monetization strategy for the 2025-2026 budget period, which prioritizes commercial agriculture, industrialization, and digital transformation as pathways to economic growth.
