Sabah's head of state received formal designation as the next leader of Universiti Malaysia Sabah during a ceremony on Monday at Istana Seri Kinabalu. Tun Musa Aman, who serves as Yang Dipertua Negeri, accepted his appointment document as the institution's fourth chancellor from Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, who represented His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia. The 73-year-old will hold the position from Oct. 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2028.
During the proceedings, Zambry explained that the university's constitutional provisions designate the chancellor as its highest authority and require the officeholder to lead graduation ceremonies when in attendance. The minister was joined by Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, wife of the Yang Dipertua Negeri, along with university board chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan and vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor.
University officials stated the selection strengthens connections between state governance and academic institutions while elevating the campus as a hub for scholarly dialogue and creative development across East Malaysia. Tun Musa previously led Sabah as chief minister and held portfolios covering finance and served as university pro-chancellor.
