Two police officers jailed for taking $5 bribe from truck driver

Two police officers went to jail after judges found them guilty of taking money from a truck driver. Dennis Tafadzwa Chivaku and Sharon Madondo each received four years behind bars. The court took away one year from their sentences. They will stay locked up for three years total. Both officers broke the law when they accepted a five dollar bribe.

The officers worked at a road checkpoint near Sunway City Special Economic Zone. Their job involved stopping illegal sand mining activities around Ruwa. Instead of doing their duties properly, they asked truck drivers for cash payments. The corrupt officers charged five dollars per truck to let illegal sand hauling continue. They made this deal with multiple drivers over several months.

Police headquarters heard about the problem after a truck driver complained about crooked officers. Investigators decided to catch the bad cops using a secret operation. They sent an informant driving an empty truck with marked money to the checkpoint area. Chivaku and Madondo stopped the vehicle and demanded payment for safe passage. Officers arrested both men the moment they touched the trap cash.

The two criminals belonged to a five person police team called Operation No to Illegal Sand Poaching. Three other officers named Freeway Muninipi, Givemore Mucheka, and Getrude Ndenga also worked on this squad. The Harare Magistrates Court heard all the evidence during their trial. Judges decided both defendants deserved prison time for betraying public trust and helping criminals.
