Tyler Perry backs pastor after viral church rebuke

Tyler Perry contributed $100,000 to Perfecting Church in Detroit despite online criticism of Bishop Marvin Winans. The donation supports a building project that has been in progress since 2002 at 7 Mile and Woodward.

The controversy began on October 19, when Winans asked congregants for donations of $1,000 or more at a fundraising event. Longtime member Roberta McCoy gave $1,235, but was corrected by Winans on the amount. Video of the exchange spread widely and drew public criticism.

McCoy later said Winans did not rebuke her and that he was organizing donors by donation levels. Winans apologized to McCoy directly after the incident. The pastor explained he was managing the service flow by calling donors in increments.

Perry has a history of supporting churches and community initiatives. Social media users criticized the donation, calling it an endorsement of inappropriate behavior. Perry has not responded to the backlash.
