Ubisoft Reportedly Making New Hero Battle Royale Game

Ubisoft works on another live service game despite planning to shut down XDefiant next June. According to Insider-Gaming, this battle royale project carries the codename Scout. Company leaders want to fill a gap they see as Apex Legends player numbers decrease.

Rainbow Six stands as their most successful live service title, though it requires payment rather than following the free-to-play model. Among free games, Brawlhalla likely performs best for Ubisoft. Other titles include Battle Core Arena, Rocksmith+, Roller Champions, Trackmania, and Rabbids Coding. The company rarely discusses how these games perform financially.

Past free-to-play attempts like XDefiant and Hyper Scape failed to maintain audiences. This new project faces similar challenges in an already crowded market. Major battle royales such as Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and PUBG continue dominating the genre, and few newcomers can break through.

After its initial popularity faded, XDefiant might have found success with additional time and different support strategies. The classic multiplayer approach possibly offered better chances than entering the competitive battle royale space. Whether Ubisoft will give their new project enough time remains uncertain.
