Uganda beat Ebola again. The country declared itself free from the Sudan strain after a recent outbreak infected 14 people. Four victims died before health officials contained the spread.
Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng made the announcement Saturday in Mbale at an event with WHO officials present. The last patient went home on March 14, 2025. Officials waited the required 42 days with no new cases before declaring victory. The outbreak started when a nurse died at Mulago Hospital in late January.
Seven districts faced infections across three cities. Aceng warned people to stay put when they feel sick with an unknown illness. The first victim traveled through Mbale, Kampala, Mukono, and Wakiso, even seeing a traditional healer. Another victim, a child, received care at several Kampala facilities, but doctors missed the Ebola diagnosis until death. This child lost both mother and sibling earlier. These cases are connected to confirmed Ebola patients from Fort Portal city, Kyegegwa, and Ntoroko districts.
