Uganda Flirts with Maldives for Hot Tourism Deal

Uganda wants stronger ties with the Maldives through better trade and tourism partnerships. Professor Joyce Kikafunda presented her credentials as Uganda's ambassador to Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday. She serves as Uganda's representative to India and also handles Maldives relations from her base there. Trade between the two countries remains very low at only 422,000 dollars per year. Kikafunda promised to work hard connecting government officials and business people from both nations.

The Maldives has a successful tourism industry that Uganda wants to learn from. Uganda plans to grow its tourism sector as one of four key areas to expand the economy ten times larger over fifteen years. President Muizzu said Ugandan chili peppers have become popular in Maldives markets. He promised his government would help increase trade and tourism cooperation between the countries. Both leaders discussed removing visa requirements for diplomats and government workers.

The Maldives attracts millions of visitors each year with its beautiful beaches and underwater attractions. Uganda established diplomatic relations with the Maldives back in November 1993. President Muizzu thanked Uganda for hosting important international meetings recently. The island nation's tourism success makes it an attractive partner for Uganda's development goals.
