Uganda Judge Jailed in UK for Maid Slavery Scandal

A Ugandan High Court judge faces prison time in the UK. Lydia Mugambe received a six-year four-month sentence after an Oxford court found her guilty of human trafficking. She brought a young Ugandan woman to Britain, where she made her work as an unpaid maid and childcare provider.

Police discovered these crimes when they visited her Oxfordshire home in February 2023. The court heard how Mugambe prevented her victim from finding legal work and misled her about why she came to the UK. Despite these serious allegations, Mugambe joined the United Nations judicial roster just three months later.

Her legal career spans decades, starting in Uganda in 2000. She later worked with the Rwanda war crimes tribunals and became a High Court judge in 2013. Mugambe holds law degrees from universities in Uganda, South Africa, and Sweden. She speaks English and knows some French and is studying for her doctorate at Oxford University.

Mugambe belongs to several international judge groups and writes about human rights issues. The prosecutor said Mugambe took advantage of her victim, who knew little about proper employment rights in Britain.
