Uganda marked a high point as Dr Matthias Magoola from Dei Biopharma won the 2025 Pharma Ratna Universe Award in India. The ceremony took place on April 20 at the Taj Skyline hotel. Ms Olivia Kemigisa accepted the prize for Dr Magoola. Award judges praised him as someone who started with nothing but made Africa proud through his work. They noted he runs the largest pharmaceutical company in Africa with plans to end malaria across the continent.
Hitesh Upreti, CEO at Dei Biopharma, said the award shows global respect for African excellence. The company makes essential medicines at its facility near Kampala. President Museveni promised government help during an April 13 meeting at State House. He plans to speed up laws helping Uganda reach World Health Organization standards for vaccine production.
Dr Magoola thanked the president for backing scientists like him. The United States Patent Office published his cancer treatment patent on February 6. His method uses guided RNA with Cas9 protein to target bad genes in cancer cells. This builds on Nobel Prize-winning CRISPR technology but attacks only cancer cells without harming healthy ones.
The same office approved his universal foot and mouth disease vaccine patent on January 7. Dr Magoola has filed over 100 patents for treatments against major diseases like HIV and malaria. He stands among new African scientists creating home-grown answers to health problems instead of depending on outside help.
