Sports education chief Dr. Duncans Mugumya slammed districts that ignore athletics programs. He spoke before the National Kids Athletics Championship in Kabale after training 210 officials. His comments came on Sunday at Kigezi High School Primary, where participants received certificates.
Mugumya stressed sports as key to education. He warned schools against using fake players, saying cheaters would face disqualification. He asked schools to push girls toward sports participation. The trained officials will serve as judges, starters, timekeepers, and record managers at the event.
The championship will welcome teams from all 178 local governments across Uganda. Special needs athletes will also compete in the games. Competitors fall into under-12 or under-14 age groups. About 5,000 young athletes will join races like 60-meter sprints, relays, and 800-meter runs. Field events feature long jump, triple jump, javelin, shot put, discus, and high jump.
