Uganda's NUP vets candidates while its members are sent to prison

National Unity Platform begins parliamentary candidate assessments Monday through September 21. Chairperson Harriet Chemutai announced the week-long evaluation process during a Kavule headquarters briefing. Candidates must arrive at party offices by 8 am with required documentation. The assessment combines committee interviews worth 40 percent and community feedback valued at 60 percent.

Regional scheduling divides districts across six days starting with Wakiso, West Nile, and Kigezi areas. Kampala, Acholi, and Ankole regions follow on September 16. Greater Masaka, Lango, and Tooro receive evaluation slots on the 17th. Greater Mpigi, Karamoja, and Bunyoro complete assessments on the 18th. Final sessions address Greater Mukono, Sebei, Teso, Rwenzori, Greater Mubende, Bugisu, Greater Luwero, and Busoga territories.

Central Region coordinator John Mary Ssebuufu emphasized party solidarity among unsuccessful applicants. The committee previously faced allegations regarding fairness during local government selections. Recent detentions of party aspirants complicate the candidate selection timeline as the 2026 elections approach.
