Uganda Military Officials Visit Algeria, Seek Cooperation.
ALGIERS, Algeria—A group of top Ugandan army officers visited Algeria on Wednesday. They want the two countries to work together more on military matters.
Maj. Gen. James Birungi, Uganda's head of military intelligence, led the trip. Maj. Gen. Bob Ogiki and Maj. Gen. Keith Katungi, and two other high-ranking leaders also went.
The team visited an Algerian war college and schools for military leaders. They also saw a factory that makes soldiers' clothes and beds.
The Ugandan officers met with Algerian generals at each place. They talked about ways the two armies could help each other. Algeria has one of Africa's strongest militaries.
Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the head of Uganda's armed forces, was supposed to lead the Ugandan group. However, he had to go back home early for work. Maj. Gen. Birungi said he was sorry Gen. Kainerugaba could not stay.
On Tuesday, Gen. Kainerugaba met with his Algerian counterpart, Gen. Saïd Chanegriha. They discussed a new deal between their militaries and visited Algerian navy and air force bases.
The Wednesday visits followed that meeting. The Ugandans said they received a warm welcome and felt good about the talks they had with the Algerians.
Uganda and Algeria want to sign an agreement soon to boost military ties. The Ugandan officers' trip aimed to find areas where the two countries could cooperate more.
Stronger links between the Ugandan and Algerian armed forces could change the military balance in Africa. Both countries may gain new abilities and support from working together.
The visits also show that Uganda's military wants to play a bigger role in the region and beyond. Part of that plan is making friends with strong armies like Algeria's.
