Uganda ends military ties with Germany in spy row

Uganda cut all military ties with Germany after accusing their ambassador of causing trouble. The army blamed Matthias Schauer for working against the government. Army leaders said they had proof but never showed any evidence. This decision shocked diplomats around the world. The move happened on May 25, 2025.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba sparked the whole mess with his angry social media posts. He threatened to hurt opposition leader Bobi Wine and bragged about torturing people. European diplomats met with government officials three weeks earlier to complain about these posts. They warned that Kainerugaba was making Uganda look bad. His uncle promised to control him but that made things worse.

Kainerugaba runs the army and many people think he will replace his father as president. He has posted threats against Western diplomats and opposition members. His group plans to protest at the German embassy next month. The government is cracking down hard before elections happen next year. Many opposition supporters have been arrested or kidnapped.

Germany called the accusations completely false and ridiculous. The two countries have traded goods worth $335 million last year. Germany has helped train Uganda's military for many years. The German government said the claims have no proof behind them.

Uganda is moving closer to Russia for military help instead. Russian officials visited Uganda recently to discuss defense deals. A large Russian military team met with army leaders in August. Uganda wants Russia to help build weapons and fix military equipment.
