UK to Sanction Rwanda Amid Congo Conflict

Britain plans to impose special rules on Rwanda very soon. These rules are called sanctions. They are being implemented because Rwanda might help fighters in Congo, which is next to Rwanda.

Ray Collins works for the British government. Someone asked him if Britain would make these rules for Rwanda. He said, "Yes." When asked when this would happen, he answered, "Soon."

Mr. Collins also said Britain had already told Rwanda what it thought. Britain will take action quickly.

Many countries feel worried about Rwanda. They believe Rwanda helps a group called M23. Since January, this M23 group has taken control of big areas in eastern Congo. They captured cities named Goma and Bukavu. They also took places with valuable rocks and minerals from the ground.

The Rwanda government says it does not help M23. They claim their soldiers only protect themselves from mean groups based in Congo.

Last Thursday, the United States imposed sanctions on James Kabarebe, who works closely with Rwanda's President Paul Kagame. The United States says Mr. Kabarebe talks to M23 for the Rwanda government. Rwanda thinks these American sanctions aren't fair.
