Ukraine to receive French Rafale jets in major deal

France has committed to supplying Ukraine with as many as 100 Rafale F4 fighter jets along with eight air defense systems and advanced radar technology under an agreement Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described as historic. The arrangement, signed with French President Emmanuel Macron at an air base outside Paris, establishes a strategic partnership spanning ten years beginning next year. Fighter jet deliveries are scheduled for completion by 2035, while collaborative production of interceptor drones will commence this year.

Financial specifics remain under negotiation, though France reportedly intends to pursue EU funding and potentially tap frozen Russian assets to support the deal. The weapons package aims to strengthen Ukrainian defenses against intensifying Russian aerial bombardments that have targeted energy infrastructure and transportation networks, causing widespread power outages and civilian casualties.

Following his visit to France, Zelensky will continue seeking military assistance in Spain. Over the weekend, he secured a natural gas agreement with Greece to facilitate US liquefied natural gas shipments through Balkan pipelines this winter.
