Ulsan court jails homeless ramen thief, prison time for snacking spree

A sixty-year-old homeless man received an eighteen-month prison sentence for repeatedly breaking into buildings to steal food items. The Ulsan District Court delivered the verdict on Sunday after finding him guilty of habitual theft under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. Authorities charged him with multiple break-ins at homes and restaurants where he consumed noodles and various snacks. The court imposed the lengthy sentence despite minimal financial losses because of his criminal history and current probation status. His pattern of food theft had continued across several months before his arrest.

Court records revealed that the defendant entered an empty residence in Ulsan during December and stole instant ramen noodles. He prepared and consumed the stolen food directly in the house kitchen before leaving the premises. The following month brought another incident when he illegally entered a restaurant located in Yangsan within South Gyeongsang Province. During this break-in, he ate ramyeon noodles, chicken feet, and drank two bottles of soju alcohol. Police investigations showed he had maintained this survival strategy since becoming homeless after his prison release in December.
