Umuka Community Erupts Over Woman Murder Coverup

A community in Ebonyi State faces growing anger over what they call the murder of a young woman. People in Umuka village say the main suspect walks free because his relative works for the Department of State Services. They sent a formal complaint to the police chief asking for action.

The trouble started during a funeral on April 28, 2025. A woman tried to take a sleeping child from the burial ceremony. Community leaders stopped her and decided she should go to the police station. A young man named Chichebem Okorie Ogudu offered to take her there.

The woman never made it to the police station alive. Her body appeared at a nearby motor park the next morning. Chichebem never came back to tell village leaders what happened. Police later arrested him and two other men.

Community members say a DSS official removed Chichebem from the case because they are cousins. The other two suspects remain in jail. Village leaders claim this creates unfair treatment and want police to arrest Chichebem immediately.

The local police spokesman has not responded to questions about the case.
