UN frets over AI takeover, Guterres begs for global babysitters

The United Nations initiated its Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance during a high-level meeting Thursday. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared that AI transformation has begun and questioned whether humanity will collectively manage this change or allow technology to control society. The dialogue builds upon last year's Global Digital Compact, which established the first universal AI governance agreement. This framework operates through three foundational elements of policy, science and capacity development.

The initiative aims to create secure AI systems while promoting governance compatibility and accessible innovation worldwide. Every nation receives representation in global AI discussions through this universal platform. General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock warned that AI's trillion-dollar market concentrates benefits among few participants while excluding developing regions. The technology's massive energy requirements may accelerate climate problems without clean power sources.
