UN Official Applauds UPDF Troops in Somalia for Boosting Security

Raised on Zenenga from the United Nations has praised Ugandan troops who guard UN facilities in Somalia. He noted their excellent work created security for UN staff members. At a recent command change ceremony in Mogadishu, he stated these soldiers performed duties professionally, helping the organization meet its goals through maintaining a safe environment. Mr Zenenga emphasized that Uganda should feel proud of its military contribution and expressed deep appreciation from the United Nations for its service commitment.

The command handover involved Lieutenant Colonel Peter Ruyogoza Barigye replacing Lieutenant Colonel David Emmanuel Odong after completing one year of service. Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma, who leads the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission, reminded personnel about their responsibility to protect both UNSOM and UNSOS operations. He congratulated Lieutenant Colonel Odong for leadership that safeguarded communities, secured important infrastructure, and built trust throughout Somalia.

Lieutenant General Kavuma urged the incoming commander to maintain high-performance standards. He described effective leadership as requiring unity, collaboration, and setting good examples. The general acknowledged three important factors: Somali citizen resilience, troop dedication, and international backing. He stated that despite difficulties on the path toward stability for Somalia, success remains possible through courage, integrity, and human respect.

Lieutenant Colonel Odong thanked UPDF leadership for allowing him to serve with the UN Guard Unit and participate in peacekeeping efforts. The new commander pledged to continue building upon previous achievements. Lieutenant Colonel Barigye expressed gratitude for being trusted with this responsibility and promised close cooperation with United Nations partners to fulfill all required duties. Several officials attended the ceremony, including Brigadier General Joseph Ssemwanga, various staff officers, Somali community representatives, and United Nations personnel.
