UN to grade Bangladesh's homework on LDC graduation

The United Nations will conduct an independent assessment of Bangladesh's readiness to leave its least developed country classification after the interim government requested the review. UN Under-Secretary-General Rabab Fatima told Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Monday that the evaluation will start within weeks and finish by mid-January. An international consultant and Bangladeshi expert will jointly examine whether the nation can handle the transition by consulting government officials, business leaders and civil society groups.

Yunus said the graduation has become an emotional topic and stressed the need for current data before making decisions. Fatima noted UN economic information on Bangladesh is more than two years old and conditions have changed substantially since then. The chief adviser voiced concerns about the pharmaceutical sector losing trade benefits tied to the country's current status. Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam confirmed the assessment timeline during a briefing at a city hotel.
