UNBS rolls out electronic portal for faster import clearance and inspection in Uganda

Uganda National Bureau of Standards launched an electronic system for processing imported goods on July 23, 2025. The web-based platform connects with Uganda Revenue Authority's ASYCUDA World system to streamline customs operations. Executive Director James Kasigwa announced that all importers must utilize this digital portal for mandatory inspections. The system supports regulations requiring clearance certificates before goods leave customs areas. Import operations will receive enhanced transparency through automated certificate generation.

The portal provides importers with digital dashboards for tracking laboratory samples and monitoring progress. Valid conformity certificates and roadworthiness documents receive immediate processing without additional delays. Mobile applications handle pre-export verification exemption requests while maintaining enhanced cybersecurity protocols. Business costs decrease through reduced processing times and improved coordination between government agencies. Uganda imported merchandise valued at over 38 trillion shillings during the previous financial year.

The digitization initiative supports broader government efforts to modernize public services and facilitate international trade. Importers and clearing agents can access support through UNBS offices in Bweyogerere or online resources. The agency encourages complete stakeholder engagement with the new electronic platform.
