United States halts Zimbabwe visa services over defiance

The United States halted routine visa processing at its Zimbabwe embassy effective Thursday due to elevated overstay rates and diplomatic tensions. State Department officials suspended applications for tourist, business, student, and exchange visitor categories while maintaining services for diplomatic and official purposes. Current visa holders retain their travel privileges.

Zimbabwe demonstrates a 10.57 percent overstay rate for business and tourism visas, affecting approximately 709 individuals. Student visa infractions also contributed to the decision. The suspension stems partly from Zimbabwe's refusal to establish a safe third country agreement that would permit the US to return asylum seekers. Only Eswatini, Rwanda, and South Sudan among African nations have accepted such arrangements.

This action reflects broader immigration enforcement measures. Washington previously warned 19 countries about passport security weaknesses and excessive overstay rates, giving them sixty days for corrections. The administration recently mandated bonds reaching $15,000 for Malawi and Zambia visa applicants as departure guarantees.
