UPDF guns down 41 in Rwenzori attacks sweep

Uganda's military confirmed that 41 attackers died and more than 90 others were apprehended after armed groups simultaneously struck police and army facilities across three districts on November 1. The assaults targeted locations in Bundibugyo, Kasese and Fort Portal City, deploying weapons ranging from submachine guns to machetes against installations that included barracks, stations and a teacher training college.

Major General Stephen Mugerwa, who commands the Mountain Division, identified Asuman Mukirania Muganzi from Bundibugyo District as the suspected organizer among those killed. Speaking on Tuesday at Muhote Army Barracks, he warned against interpreting the violence through ethnic divisions and noted that participants came from various communities across the nation. Security forces have strengthened their deployment throughout the Rwenzori area while investigations continue into funding sources and operational networks behind the coordinated strikes.

The detained suspects remain at Muhote Barracks pending completion of inquiries, after which prosecutors will file charges. Bodies of the deceased will be moved to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital for family identification and burial arrangements, according to Major Robert Kijuma.
